Yoga Teacher Training: The Foundation Course

** The current course is underway, please email if you wish to be considered for the 2026 intake**

Under The Traditional Yoga Association there are 2 courses that form your instruction as a yoga teacher. The first is The foundation Course, this is a 36 hour course or 6 sessions where you will learn the fundamentals of yoga.

You must complete this course to undergo your formal instruction as a yoga teacher. You can also just do this course as a means for developing your knowledge of yoga and not undergo the teacher training. Additional reading and study materials are provided and to get the most out of the course additional study time is recommended.

The second part – The Yoga Teacher Training module is the course proper. This is a comprehensive programme and a much longer commitment. In addition to the course there is much more contact between student-teachers and the course tutor. This is a 300+ hour course and takes approximately 2 to 2.5 years, although, you can be insured to start teaching yoga 6 months into this course. The final certification graduates you from trainee teacher to full teacher.

About The Traditional Yoga Association (TYA)

The Traditional Yoga Association School of Yoga

Formed by my teacher, Swami Ambikananda in 1992 the TYA has much older roots, the inspiration is Swami Sivananda, the Himalayan sage of the last century who almost single-handedly created the means for ancient teachings to be presented to modern minds, and one of his leading disciples, Swami Venkatesananda. Swami Sivananda would himself say of his disciple, Swami Venkatesananda, ‘… he is the crest jewel of my mission’ ~ a prophetic statement about Swami Venkatesananda who traversed the globe with Swami Sivananda’s message of, ‘serve, love, give…’

Both Swami Sivananda and Swami Venkatesh were considered enlightened by their contemporaries. The TYA is a yoga school and charity. Once you qualify you will be a TYA teacher – like me!

What Makes This Training Special?

I would like to make you aware of 2 very important factors.

Yoga taught in the Parampara Tradition

The first, the lineage of teaching. I used to think this wasn’t important until I developed as a yoga teacher. I realise how lucky I have been to cross paths with a living master of yoga. I have completed many training courses in yoga, so far; nothing has surpassed the skill and wisdom of Swami Ambikananda… and she says the same about her teacher, Swami Venkateshananda.

If you want to understand yoga then the transmission of knowledge is a big part. There are other lineages of value; for example the students of Krishnamacharya like Iyengar (Iyengar Yoga) or Pattabhi Jois (Ashtanga yoga). Unfortunately most of what they left behind been manipulated by The British Wheel of Yoga to fit their agenda.

Secondly; the course material. It is the work of my teacher and I have been re-studying it under her guidance. In effect, I am delivering her course as it was delivered to me all those years ago. The course includes several important translations by Swami Ambikananda, these are of primary source material, meaning that you are learning yoga as the yogis do.

The Teacher Training Course

Having completed the Foundation Course you will be invited to embark on your journey into becoming a yoga teacher. Some part of this course will be delivered by my teacher, Swami Ambikananda. It was probably the most fruitful part of my yoga journey so far, the time I had with my teacher and tutor group was some of the best moments in my life. 6 Months into the course and you are issued a ‘trainee teacher’ certification which means you can get insured and start teaching your own classes.

The full qualification is much later. The benefit of this system is that you get to teach yoga whilst having a firm grasp of teaching styles and still have access to me, your teacher group and also my teacher Swami Ambikananda.

This course is now fully subscribed. Please email me if you wish to be considered for the 2026 intake.
